Thanks for creating this page, User:Masiarek! I have plenty of nitpicks to make (since my preference is for articles that can easily be copied over to English Wikipedia by a motivated individual, and English Wikipedia has many nitpickers, including myself). However, it's clear that "exhausted ballots" are a topic that is not well understood, and needs to be understood by people promoting any voting method based on Single Transferable Vote (including Ranked Choice Voting). You'll notice that I unilaterally renamed the page already (from "Exhausted Choices" to "Exhausted choices") which is explained more at Electowiki:The_electowiki_handbook#Style. I'll probably make some other unilateral changes to the article pripr to making more comments here (but please drop a note on my talk page at "User_talk:RobLa if it looks like I'm changing things too quickly). -- RobLa (talk) 23:13, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

what headers to use? what topics to cover? what questions to answer? is it only RCV problem how to present a neutral point of view vs proponents vs critics. does it make sense to show a numerical example
my suggestion: focus only on 2nd and 3rd elimination (this is the controversial and misunderstood part). -some types of exhausted ballots are non-controversial (e.g voter selects only 1 candidate, voter made mistake).

RCV Truncated ballot (partial voting) vs exhausted
RCV ballot - the ordering is incomplete (called partial voting).
Forced truncation - voters are allowed to rank only a limited number of candidates (by voting admin) vs - voluntary (by voter)
Tabulation process - a truncated ballot is exhausted when all of the candidates it ranks have been eliminated.
Ballot exhaustion and, therefore ballot truncation, is a concern in single-winner elections when the margin of victory in the final stage is less than the number of exhausted ballots.
Messy merge
I merged the old "Exhausted choices" page with "Exhausted ballot", after a video call which included User:Masiarek. I merged the histories of the two pages, which means that diffs from before may be a bit screwy, but the full history of both articles is available for folks that really want to see old versions and know how to read the version history. I didn't do the same for the talk pages; there's now Talk:Exhausted ballot/1 which is the old talk page for "Exhausted ballot", and (as of this writing) this page is "Talk:Exhausted ballot". -- RobLa (talk) 07:56, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
Exhausted terminology
Hi User:Masiarek: this is a response to your February 2023 comment on Talk:Spoiled ballot. Per our conversation earlier today/yesterday (well, on August 8 in the United States anyway), it seemed time to merge "exhausted ballot" and "exhausted choices". In general, since we're (more-or-less) following English Wikipedia's style guide here on electowiki (see Electowiki:Manual of Style), we generally want to refer to singular rather than plural in the title (and plural in the categories). Moreover, the Venn diagram I whiteboarded out during our video conversation gave us the following taxonomy:
- Exhausted ballots without truncation
- Exhausted ballots with truncation
- Truncated ballots (that aren't exhausted)
The "exhausted ballot" page also lists "involuntary exhaustion", which seems to fit in the "exhausted ballots without truncation" category. It would seem that the "Exhausted ballot" page could be used to describe this concept more fully. -- RobLa (talk) 08:37, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
