The prospect of majority government on a minority of votes remains quite possible, and in large part PR squared is advocated for pragmatic reasons. It is essentially a "half-way house" between FPTP and PR, retaining much of the former's structure and familiarity, while going a considerable distance towards proportionality.

===Similar systems===
Aside from the novel idea of allocating seats proportionally to the square of the votes, the system has some resemblance to the ''Zweitmandat'' in Baden-Württembergg, the ''Sekihairitsu'' used in Japan, [[Dual member proportional]] proposed in Canada, known as "best loser" systems.

PR squared may not fit that definition, however, since it is hard to view as a loser a candidate who gains a strong second-place in a '''''two'''-member'' seat, and these are the candidates the system elects.
