When there is no Condorcet loser, or no Condorcet ranking, it may be possible to instead use the ranking produced by any [[Smith-efficient]] [[Condorcet method]] which outputs a [[Smith set ranking]] to figure out who should be eliminated next.
Using a Condorcet method that passes [[local independence of irrelevant alternatives]] provides an additional benefit: elimination doesn't change the relative order of the other candidates. That is, recomputing the Condorcet ranking every time someone is eliminated would have no effect; only after a candidate is elected and surpluses redistributed would the ranking change. STV-CLE with such a method is thus more self-consistent throughout eliminations than using one that doesn't pass [[local IIA]].
