Consensus voting is another name for approval voting because approval voting is the simplest voting system that satisfies the unanimous consensus criterion and the greatest possible consensus criterion.

Technically, consensus voting is syntactically identical to approval voting; however, it is different from approval voting semantically. Specifically, voters are asked which alternatives they consent (as opposed to approve with approval voting). This semantic difference is important because it ensures that consensus voting satisfies the unanimous consensus criterion and greatest possible consensus criterion.
