User:BetterVotingAdvocacy, couldn't this just be expressed in text form? (And then it would be editable and maintainable by other people?) Do we need a template for putting text into a frame or something? — Psephomancy (talk) 04:19, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

It's a tough call for me, personally. I like having images to look at, and I also think it's hard to imitate that green circle and green checkmarks I added in the image in a text format. The power of an image is that it can be shared on its own; I think https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/unifiedprimary/pages/227/features/original/How_Does_STAR_Work_.svg?1560250944 is a great example of something which, while not strictly needing to be put in image form, is great. But I can work with you and other editors if you guys want to discuss making some kind of standard or rule around these things. Edit: A pretty good alternative reason is that the image can propagate in Google Images. BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 04:38, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
@BetterVotingAdvocacy: But that STAR example has all kinds of graphical elements in it.  :) This is just text with a green box. File:Finding the Condorcet loser.png and File:Pairwise counting procedure.png are similar. — Psephomancy (talk) 03:38, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Part of the rationale for having it as an image and not text is to maybe make it easier for readers to optionally read it, because it is in the side of the article and not the main part (it is on the right side and is obviously an explainer image, so one need not look at it if they just want to read the article). If you guys reaaaally want to have the image turned into text, I can do that. But can you give me some ideas on making a good "finding the Condorcet winner" image, one that could stay in the article? I think explanatory images are worth a lot. BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 04:07, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

because it is in the side of the article and not the main part

I'm sure there's a way to do that with templates while still keeping it as editable text, if that's important.

I think explanatory images are worth a lot.

I'm 100% in favor of explanatory images, but these aren't really images; they're just walls of text in PNG format. — Psephomancy (talk) 04:08, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
If you can find the way to do it with a template, then I can go ahead and convert it to text. Otherwise, as a compromise, I'm okay with the images being taken down from the posts, but I'd prefer to still leave links to them in the article (i.e. at the bottom of the article it might say "see (File:Finding the Condorcet loser.png) for an example") BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 04:56, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
I've added Template:Image frame which allows anything to be in a frame. Example:

Here is some text

Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lotswords blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah. Lots of words blah blah.

Here is some outlined text

Here is a caption
I guess it's a little more complicated to work with than an image, but might be useful... — Psephomancy (talk) 21:54, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do with this, thanks. Do you have any guides that can explain how to work with that

markup language stuff? Edit: It's also worth considering whether it's possible to make the templates unique i.e. "Finding the Condorcet winner" could be a template that's searchable and linkable, similar to the "Definition" template. That could be very useful across the site. BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 22:43, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

You mean you want to put the text in a template and use it in more than one article? You can do that. I think you can transclude regular pages, too. — Psephomancy (talk) 03:41, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
