Is MAM the same as Ranked Pairs?

It appears as thought Markus Schulze and Steve Eppley discussed this back in 2010 over on Wikipedia at w:Talk:Ranked pairs#MAM. Steve claims that MAM was an independently-invented variant of Ranked Pairs, whereas Markus accuses Steve of trying to assert ownership of a non-notable reinvention of Ranked Pairs. I can't yet say that I'm qualified to arbitrate that dispute, but it appears as though the w:English Wikipedia community decided to merge w:Maximize Affirmed Majorities into w:Ranked pairs. -- RobLa (talk) 03:54, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

From what I can tell it depends on whether you judge the "distinctiveness" of by the distinctiveness of their properties or the distinctiveness of their procedure. MAM is just Ranked Pairs with extra rules for handling equal-ranks, from what I can tell—RP(wv). Those rules create very different behavior and incentives compared to Ranked Pairs without equal-ranks (which make MAM a top-shelf method, unlike the orignal RP). —Closed Limelike Curves (talk) 20:13, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
