Talk:Instant Pairwise Elimination

From electowiki

Thinking about the discussion over at https://electowiki.org/wiki/Talk:Condorcet_ranking, I had an idea; what if we came up with a concept like the Smith Set, except this time for Condorcet losers rather than winners? That is, if there is no Condorcet loser, there is still a smallest group of candidates such that fewer voters prefer anyone in the group over anyone outside of the group. Your method could constrain itself to eliminating someone inside this "Smith loser set" (if I'm correct about this idea).

Here is a concrete example:

 51 A
 1 B>C>D
 1 C>D>B
 1 D>B>C

The "Smith loser set" is (B, C, D).

I added leading spaces (= <pre> tags) to format your ballots. I wonder if we should make a template for these, since they're so ubiquitous? They get formatted differently in every article. — Psephomancy (talk) 17:03, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
I don't know if I'd personally use templates, since it seems easy enough to simply add 4 spaces before each line to make a quote now that you've explained that :) BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 18:07, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
2 spaces.  :) But I mean it could be formatted more prettily than just putting it in a box in a monospace font. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ — Psephomancy (talk) 03:58, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
You know, it would be interesting to have a wiki page dedicated to explaining best formatting practices, how to do some of the formatting when editing the source, etc. It could be a link on the home page. And there could be ongoing discussion on how best to format things on that page's discussion page. BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 04:43, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
That's what Electowiki:Help is supposed to be, and I added a link to the sidebar a few weeks ago (and the MediaWiki help link is above it). Have you seen it? — Psephomancy (talk) 19:17, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Ah no, I had not. There's quite a lot of fleshing out that could be done for it; I think editing on wikis might be a lot more attractive to many people if there is maybe an FAQ of common mistakes, expectations for the quality of writing, etc. Probably it'd be a good idea to write out all of what might be desirable to put on that page on its discussion page. 1. We should move this discussion somewhere more geeral.
  2. Here's my first attempt at a template:
51 A
 1 B > C > D
 1 C > D > B
 1 D > B > C

What do you think? — Psephomancy (talk) 00:00, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

We could discuss this at https://electowiki.org/wiki/Template_talk:Ballots. Regarding your template, I don't know if it's just me, but it looks like a blue background version of the other 2-line indented ballot set. I thought you were looking for something more revolutionary than that. BetterVotingAdvocacy (talk) 00:08, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
That's pretty much what it is, yes, with a monospace sans serif font. If you have a more revolutionary look in mind, please suggest it. One benefit of pre-formatted text is it can be directly pasted into calculators like http://www.ericgorr.net/condorcet/ and http://www.cs.angelo.edu/~rlegrand/rbvote/calc.html (but a list-based format can be, too, at least in my browser,it doesn't copy the bullets). — Psephomancy (talk) 00:40, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
