Icons

As User:Dmehus pointed out over on Electowiki talk:The caucus, the icons that show up for interwiki links (e.g. "mw:Help:Links" and "wikipedia:Help:Links") are really nicely done. I can't take credit for it; if anyone associated with electowiki was responsible, my guess is that it was User:Psephomancy. But it's still a mystery to me how it's done. I agree with User:Dmehus though; they're really nice. -- RobLa (talk) 06:01, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

@RobLa: Darn, I was hoping you'd know how to do it, so I could do this over at Public Test Wiki and maybe, eventually, over at Meta or the Miraheze Commons, too. I presume it's done through the user interface somehow, by calling up a template containing the little icons, but the documentation for the MediaWiki: namespace, I find, to be rather lacking. If Psephomancy is still semi-active around here, I'd love to know the secret. It's perfect. Dmehus (talk) 14:18, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Though I didn't expect the link to Public Test Wiki to have an interwiki icon, it's worth noting the Miraheze magic hook (pseudo?) interwiki links do not have the interwiki links. Magic hooks, as Void explained to me on Discord, are a Miraheze creation that allows you to use [[mh:subdomain]] to link to other Miraheze wikis that aren't in either the global or local interwiki table. Speaking of which, if you ever have the need to add external links to Electowiki's interwiki links table, you have two options in which you can:

1. Request a member of the interwiki administrators global user group attend your wiki to add the link (most commonly, this is requested at the community noticeboard on Miraheze Meta); or,
2. Organize a local selection or election process to elect a local interwiki administrator (there can be more than one local interwiki administrator on a wiki), then, because this user right can only be granted by a steward, notify a steward at the stewards' noticeboard on Meta to attend your wiki, who will grant the right after confirming that it meets the requirements of the global and any additional local policies as may be put into place on that wiki. I'm currently hoping to improve the informational page(s) on interwiki on Meta, but from what I've been able to gather from a 2019 RfC on Meta (as well as my discussions with Void), it seems to be a requirement that any locally selected interwiki administrator hold bureaucrat rights on the local wiki (though my preference would be to see this changed, slightly, by way of a future Meta RfC or community discussion to say something to the effect of "... must hold either bureaucrat rights on the local wiki or provide evidence that a local bureaucrat has either approved or closed an applicable local discussion as successful their candidacy for local interwiki administrator." But that's for another day. ;)
