Negative vote

User:Psephomancy, I see that you created Talk:Negative vote. Today was the first time I heard of it, but it was from Steven Brams, so of course, it's legit, and the sources you lined up for an article look great. How is "Negative vote" different from Disapproval voting? -- RobLa (talk) 04:01, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

I've had those notes for writing an article for a long time but never get around to it. (I don't think it's a good system, for the record.) I'm not sure what "disapproval voting" is. "Any" voting system that has a "disapprove" option? The negative vote article is meant to specifically be about the "vote for or against one candidate" system. — Psephomancy (talk) 04:25, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Old Wikipedia article

So our article is derived from an older version of the Wikipedia article. Both say "Disapproval voting is any electoral system that allows many voters to express formal disapproval simultaneously". I would think this includes things like negative vote, w:combined approval voting, explicit approval voting, etc. Anything with a disapproval option.

However, both also say "Unlike most electoral systems, it requires that only negative measures or choices be presented to the voter or representative." So this would disqualify all of those systems, since they also have approval options.

However, Wikipedia also says "but it is sometimes used for systems that allow a voter to choose whether to vote for or against a candidate." So I don't know what "Disapproval voting" actually is, and neither do a few people on w:Talk:Disapproval voting.

Should we just define it as "systems that allow for disapproval"? Or maybe just make a category for those and trash the article entirely? Since it's redundant with Wikipedia's article anyway? — Psephomancy (talk) 22:40, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

I think the best way forward might be to delete everything but the summary (or for that matter, copy the summary over from the current wikipedia:Disapproval voting article, rather than use the zombie import from 2005, which appears to have only received minor edits on Electowiki since then). Then we can use this article to have at least a summary-style section about Negative vote, given that wikipedia:Negative voting redirects to wikipedia:Disapproval voting. -- RobLa (talk) 00:06, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
